The SAT
Overview: The SAT is the most widely recognized standardized admissions test used by colleges and universities. The test is intended to measure a high school student’s preparedness for college. The entire test, including the optional essay, runs 3 hours and 50 minutes.
Sections:
Reading (65 minutes)
Writing and Language (35 minutes)
Math I: No Calculator (25 minutes)
Math II: With Calculator (55 minutes)
Optional Essay (50 minutes)
Answers:
Questions have 4-answer multiple choice answers for all sections. However, both Math sections reserve a few student response questions where student's write-in their answers. The essay is also hand-written.
Scoring: Scored out of 1600
Score range for combined Evidence-Based Reading and Writing sections: 200-800
Score range for combined Mathematics sections: 200-800
The SHSAT
Overview: NYC's specialized high schools are advanced admissions based public schools. There are nine specialized high schools and they each have a different focus. 8 of the 9 require eighth-graders to take the SHSAT (Specialized High School Admissions Test). The SHSAT is a standardized assessment that is offered to all 8th-grade students within the five boroughs of New York City.

English Language Arts (90 minutes)
- Revising/Editing sentences and paragraphs
- Reading ComprehensionMath (90 minutes)
Answers:
The ELA test is all 4-answer multiple questions. The Math test is mainly 4-answer multiple choice but reserves a few student response questions where student's grid-in their answers.
Scoring: Scored out of 800 (typically low 700s is the highest score achieved)
Score range for English Language Arts: 100-400
Score range for combined Mathematics sections: 100-400
ACT
Overview: The ACT is like another type of SAT. Both the ACT and the SAT are nationally administered, standardized tests that help colleges and universities evaluate your application and measure your preparedness for college courses. The entire test, including the optional essay, runs 3 hours and 35 minutes.

Math (60 minutes)
Reading (35 minutes)
Science (35 minutes)
Optional Essay (40 minutes)
Answers:
The English, Reading and Science tests have 4-answer multiple choice questions. The math test has 5-answer multiple choice questions. The essay is hand-written.
Scoring: Scored out of 36
Composite is calculated by averaging scaled score of each individual test.
